Years at Deem: 4.5
Where are you from, where are you now, and where are you going?
I was born in a small village located 75 miles from Bangalore. I moved to the “Silicon Valley of India” (Bangalore) for college and have remained there for my professional career over the past 10 years. I don’t see myself moving out from my own apartment any time soon. I don’t know where the future will take us, but I hope it will be a good journey.
What brought you to Deem?
In 2011, I was looking for a change from my previous company, and I always wanted to be part of a small company since they provide you with numerous learning opportunities. I interviewed with the passionate people at Deem and it felt like a very nice fit. I’m part of a wonderful Expense Team here in Bangalore. It is always special to work on a product which is core to the company and also has ever growing market opportunity. It’s always a pleasure to work with these great people who I’ve become very close with.
What is your title and how do you define your role at Deem?
I am the Principal Software Engineer on the Expense Engineering Team here in Bangalore . My role and responsibilities are focused on product capabilities and can include a small fix, feature ownership, helping other team members, production releases, and even production support.
What’s your icebreaker at a cocktail party?
Ah, I’m thinking why do we have an icebreaker at a cocktail party? I can’t think of one now off the top of my head, as I prefer to enjoy my cocktail.
What are you passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about what we do at Deem and how my product can help businesses and people to manage themselves. Personally, I’m passionate about sports, travel, culture and music. Professionally, I’m passionate about doing cool stuff and innovating.
Who’s in your dream night out squad?
I have many close friends and cousins with whom I always want to spend time chatting, playing cards, and talking about interesting stuff.
Where would we find you on a typical Saturday afternoon?
Mostly at home with my family. I usually try to spend weekend time with parents and my cute daughter. Sometimes I do go out to meet friends and cousins. Watching a movie with my wife in a theater is another one of my favorites.
Who would your celebrity partner be on “Dancing with the Stars?”
Dancing with any celebrity is a huge thing for me. If I had the chance I would choose Chiranjeevi who is an Indian celebrity, a Tollywood megastar, and my favorite actor.
What was the last book you read, movie you saw, and/or video game that you crushed?
The Martian was the latest movie that I watched. Also, I’m a huge fan of Telugu movies and my recent three time watch movie was Baahubali (the most expensive Indian film ever made). I’m currently reading Head First Design Patterns. I’m not a big fan of video games after my school time and I mostly prefer to stay on the field to play games.
What have you learned at Deem that improved you personally/professionally?
Many things indeed. Every day it’s a pleasure to come in and collaborate with my team. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from the team I’ve been a part of, and each step teaches me more about how I can help the company grow. You can’t control the events or people around you, but you do have control over yourself. All you can do is adapt and do what you can to make a positive impact on your life, health, happiness, and others.
What’s one of your greatest personal memories of working on Deem’s product or participating in its culture?
Being a part of the Expense Team and having a chance to work with excellent people. In the Bangalore office, there are lot of cultural events happening for all the festivals and I’m privileged to be part of the organizers group. Choosing my greatest memory is hard for me as I have many, including performing my first skit for Diwali, winning the TT tournament (table tennis), and winning the t-shirt design competition.
